Vladimir Putin's foreign minister in Brazil: an embarrassing visit for Lula da Silva

2023-04-17T22:01:38.037Z

Although without naming the war in Ukraine, Sergei Lavrov proclaimed in Itamaraty that the two countries have similar approaches to international affairs.

The proclaimed neutrality of Brazil with respect to the war drama suffered by Ukraine

became a few degrees embarrassing this Monday

for the Lula da Silva government with the presence in Brasilia on an official trip of Vladimir Putin's loquacious foreign minister, Serguei Lavrov.

The official proclaimed in Itamaraty that the two countries have

"similar approaches"

in international affairs.

He didn't have to name the war.

Lavrov, a historic foreign minister with 20 years in office, moved using every inch to expose the depth of society in every sense that would exist with the second largest economy in the American hemisphere.

The visit and that attitude have backgrounds.

It comes after a few hours ago the PT leader stated in Abu Dhabi that both Ukraine and Russia

are equally responsible for the war

and condemned the US.

and to Europe for giving military assistance to kyiv.

A vision that defends and salutes the Kremlin.

Lavrov received another endorsement from his Brazilian colleague, veteran diplomat Mauro Vieira, who reiterated his country's criticism

of the sanctions that Western countries apply against Moscow

for the invasion that began a year ago.

World order

The conflict, which has also been condemned by Brazil,

is not a conventional war

.

There are no Ukrainian troops on the Russian side, nor is the Federation being hit militarily.

Only Ukraine is being attacked and invaded, calling into question the arguments for shared responsibility.

"We talked about various relevant issues on the international and regional agenda, highlighting that the approaches of Brazil and Russia to the problems happening in the world today are similar," Lavrov said.

"The two countries are united by

the desire to contribute to a more democratic and polycentric world order

, based on the fundamental principle of the sovereignty and equality of States," he added without clarifying the limits that the Kremlin imposes on those principles.

And he remarked: "We are very grateful to our Brazilian friends for their clear understanding of the genesis of the situation," in reference to the war.

Then, the foreign minister sent

an invitation from Vladimir Putin for Lula to travel to Moscow

.

"We are working to identify convenient dates for both sides," Vieira agreed, anticipating that the invitation would have been accepted. Then the Kremlin envoy met privately with the Brazilian president.

Negotiation

Lula's foreign minister repeated a notion that he had already advanced to

Clarín

last January in his first interview with an international media outlet, maintaining that "our position is in favor of an immediate ceasefire, respect for humanitarian law and a negotiated

solution with a view to a lasting peace

that addresses the security concerns of both sides".

The issue that is not particularly clear in this statement is the demand that Kiev imposes as an inevitable condition for any dialogue,

which is the withdrawal of the invading troops from its territory.

This possibility had been mentioned by Lula da Silva when he pointed out that Ukraine should cede the Crimean peninsula to achieve peace: "It cannot claim everything."

Russia, in turn, he said, should withdraw from the territories it has seized.

The comment drew a disgusted reaction from President Vladimir Zelenski who reiterated his country's decision

not to hand over an inch of land to the enemy

.

He also fired other comments.

Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt asked Lula obfuscated on social networks: “Would you be willing to give up a piece of Brazil the size of Crimea... just to get peace of mind?

We'll talk there."

Brazil has proposed, without much success for the moment, the formation of a group of

"neutral

" countries that build some kind of mediation in this conflict.

In this sense, Lula sought to involve China in the project but had no results.

During his visit to his colleague Xi Jinping, the Brazilian leader signed a series of bilateral documents that did not include the word war, speaking of crisis or conflict, in keeping with the Russian position that does not call this bloody military intervention that way and the same does the People's Republic.
