Ménaka is now surrounded.
On April 10, 2023, troops from the Islamic State in the Sahel (EIS, formerly known as "Islamic State in the Greater Sahara") temporarily entered the town of Tindarmene, 50 kilometers north of Ménaka.
The presence of the EIS in this commune is new and sanctions the influence of the group in the entire Ménaka region, as well as its ability to isolate its capital.

In the city, the Malian Armed Forces, supported by the Russian Wagner militia, and Minusma forces are still present, but patrols outside Ménaka are becoming rare.
The changing and unpredictable threat of the Islamic State is crippling some residents and economic activity.
