Why deepfakes also worry armies

INVESTIGATION - These technologies, which, thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), make it possible to make a person speak, to borrow their voice or to create a face from scratch, can become the instruments of a hybrid war which requires new means of defence.


The alert was launched by eight countries on the front line of the information warfare front.

At the end of March, the Prime Ministers of Ukraine, Moldova, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and the three Baltic countries officially challenged the leaders of Big Tech in an open letter, calling on them to be vigilant and act to fight against the manipulations that are spreading on social networks.

Moldova, at the origin of the initiative, and Ukraine insisted on

the “urgency”

to act to avoid a destabilization of their fragile democracies by the means of influence of Russia.

“Manipulation of information and foreign interference, including disinformation, are deployed to destabilize our countries, weaken our democracies, derail Moldova's and Ukraine's accession to the European Union and weaken our support for Ukraine in the context of the war led by Russia,”

they write.
