The mayor of the city, Grégory Doucet, welcomed the three hectares of nature gained on concrete this winter and the planting of 11,500 square meters of vegetation to fight against global warming, particularly significant between the Rhône and Saône.

Yasmine Bouagga (EELV) welcomed as neighbors Grégory Doucet, the mayor of Lyon, and his deputy in charge of revegetation, Gautier Chapuis, for an initial assessment of the operations undertaken after the vote on a nature plan of 141 million euros in 2022, i.e. more than 10% of the multi-year investment program (PPI).

Surrounded by employees in charge of the city's green spaces, the city councilor welcomed the 19,000 shrubs and 1,780 trees planted on 11,500 square meters of open ground in this first winter season, in addition to the 17,000 freed from the influence of buildings. .

“In total, it is nearly three hectares returned to nature, i.e. the

, launched the elected ecologist.

But disparately on the 48,000 hectares of municipal area.

The environmentalist mayor of Lyon, Grégory Doucet (in the center) stressed the need “to quickly and extremely proactively initiate a set of actions to slow down global warming” in what he calls “the last mandate for the climate ".

"The city of Lyon is in deficit of natural space

, recognized the mayor,

with 5 square meters per inhabitant against 10 recommended by the WHO"

.

And for some the first piece of greenery is far away, especially in the 8th arrondissement, where this ratio drops to 2 square meters.

It is also one of those that have experienced the greatest revegetation effort this winter (3283 square meters) with 10 streets concerned, in particular that of the Alouettes, in front of the private school Pierre Termier.

The pace of planting was doubled this winter compared to previous years, with 47 revegetation actions, including 35 streets and 9 orchards planted.

“Lyon will be and already is one of the cities most affected in Europe by global warming

,” recalled Gautier Chapuis, deputy in charge of revegetation.

Slow down global warming and adapt to it, thus saving water resources for these new green spaces.

The desimpermeabilisation of the soil facilitates a natural watering of its plantations in the ground, by rainwater, while the plantations allow to bring back birds and insects.

“We need to vegetate on all scales, from the street garden to major metropolitan projects

, continues Gautier Chapuis,

with particular attention to heat islands, deficient spaces and nodes of life.

plantations of all heights, from shrubs to climbing plants and stem-grade trees, of which 300,000 must be planted in the metropolis by 2026.

even on the facade of the town hall of the first arrondissement where wisteria and honeysuckle have been planted.

“We also want to highlight the heritage through these actions

,” adds Grégory Doucet, announcing operations in Old Lyon.

Honeysuckles and wisteria adorn the facade of the town hall of the 1st arrondissement.

“Vegetation is good for your health, living near green spaces reduces the risk of anxiety by 31% by 26% and the risk of depression

,” smiles Gautier Chapuis.

The living environment is precisely the fight of Édouard Hoffman, who asked the municipality about the proliferation of tags in this 1st arrondissement.

Present with a few other disgruntled residents, he strongly challenged elected officials on this subject, but also on the incivilities on Place Sathonay which would prevent them from taking advantage of these green spaces.

The inhabitants were invited to give their opinion on the revegetation operations to be carried out, such as the one carried out at the foot of the stairs of the Montée des Carmélites.

Of course, the largest square in Lyon, which is also one of the hottest, was mentioned by locals.

"We are studying the possibilities of revegetation of Place Bellecour"

, breathes Grégory Doucet, while the projects are recurrent and always very commented on this immense heat island.

But the presence of the car park and underground metro lines complicates the planting of large trees, unless you dig trenches.

Ditto on the Place des Terreaux, where the subject is all the more sensitive as the legal uncertainty still hovers around the intellectual property relating to the fountains of Daniel Buren four years after the repair of the place.

The mayor is not ready to hear the birds singing under his windows.
