Struggle for ice miracles goes into the next round

The fundamental decision on the artificial ice surface at the Feodor-Lynen-Gymnasium has been postponed - once again.

It is therefore clear that it will again be a winter without an ice miracle.

Planegg

– The Planegg municipal council decided on Thursday by a vote of 13:9 not to make a decision on the ice miracle until all the costs are known.

Because of the amount of time involved in the investigation, consultant Niki Warchola from Warchola Ice Events GmbH is clear: "Nothing will happen in this area before 2025."

Ground crumbly

The artificial ice surface, which is regularly set up in winter, is showing its age and the quartz sand subsoil in which the cooling hoses are laid has long since become crumbly.

Due to the risk of slipping, the field east of the two triple sports halls, which is 44 by 26 meters and surrounded by gangs, cannot be used in summer.

In the winter of 2020/21, the ice miracle was canceled due to corona.

Last year, opponents and supporters wrestled with each other for three sessions.

In the end, operations were suspended due to the energy crisis triggered by the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.

The ice miracle of the old design consumes 170,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.

In the past few weeks, local councils and administration have been looking for a way out of the dilemma of offering winter sports opportunities in the fresh air on site without wanting to waste energy.

In a workshop, it became clear that a modern artificial ice rink should be purchased, which consumes around 55,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per winter.

In summer, a multi-sports floor should enable a variety of uses.

For this purpose, a roof is to be created to enable a photovoltaic system of around 1600 square meters.

Dissent runs through factions

This year's budget is 650,000 euros.

The municipal administration suggested purchasing the new ice technology (around 450,000 euros) and the Multifloor (74,000 euros) so that the area could be used this summer and especially in winter.

A cost estimate for the roof and PV system, which together should amount to more than 1 million euros, should be prepared in the course of the year.

The discussion, which lasted several hours, showed again how divided the municipal council is.

Mayor Hermann Nafziger sent out contradictory signals.

He said at the beginning: “I vote for our proposed resolution and will implement the resolution quickly, no matter how it turns out.” However, he repeatedly referred to the challenges of creating housing and climate change and explained: “The priority must be the future of this place to secure.

And we don't secure them with the ice miracle."

The dissent ran through the fractions: Florian Großelfinger (CSU) spoke of an "ice cream that is much more ecological than what we have had in recent years".

Michaela Erdmann (CSU) explained: "I no longer find it viable to ride around on this ice these days." Peter von Schall-Riaucour (PP&M) wished for an expansion of the ice surface: "The families and their children in particular had the ice miracle painfully last year missing.” Philipp Pollems (PP&M) recalled the municipal council decision to make Planegg a climate-neutral municipality.

"Is it all just lip service?

Blowing away 55,000 kilowatt hours for an open-air refrigerator is not sustainable.”

The Freie Wahler Dynamic criticized the fact that the figures for the roof and PV system were missing.

"The declaration of intent for a PV system is not really enough for me," said Florian Max (FWD).

His parliamentary group's motion to postpone the item on the agenda until the total costs were determined found a majority.

This means that the ice miracle will be canceled in the coming winter, because the time window to get the new ice technology in time is narrow.
