The Defense Department is tracking a mysterious balloon that flew over Hawaii, three official sources told NBC News.
The object did not pass over any area of special importance for national security, according to these sources, which indicated that it is unknown what it is and to whom it may belong.
The Pentagon has been tracking it since late last week, and has determined that it does not pose a threat to national security or air traffic;
It is not communicating signals either, according to one of the sources consulted.
It is not clear if it is a weather balloon or another type of object, but it could be shot down if it approaches the ground, the sources consulted indicated.[

The object appears to lack maneuverability and is slowly heading towards Mexico, the officials said, adding that they do not believe the balloon is from China but are still trying to find out more details.
At the beginning of the year, a Chinese spy balloon flew over the United States until it was shot down in early February off the coast of the Carolinas.
The object collected information from military zones, despite the efforts of the Joe Biden Administration, to prevent it, according to what federal officials reported at the time.
