The Speaker of the American House of Representatives today (Monday) addressed the Levin recordings at a press conference and said that "Israel is an independent country.
It can decide for itself what it does as a democracy.
There should be checks and balances.
I had conversations with the president, with Prime Minister Netanyahu and with other officials.
I think everyone agrees that there needs to be some sort of reform, but we leave that to you.
Your country will decide how to do it.
It seems that the parties are getting closer to each other in their positions."
Makrathy also said: "Democracy is sometimes tough.
But you know what?
It works out well.
Look at countries that are not democratic, where there is no freedom of expression.
So I think it's healthy that you strive to solve the problems."
At the same press conference, Democratic Party senior Santi Hoyer said in the same matter: "Friends give advice to friends. I've been in Congress long enough to remember Netanyahu coming to us in Congress and giving us advice on policy. We do the same thing."
However, Hoyer said, which from my reading is correct: "Ultimately, it is the Israelis who have to make their decisions. As I understand it, the President (Herzog, Ya.) convened a forum to discuss the differences of opinion. Mr. McCarthy was the majority leader of his party in Congress, And I was the majority leader of my party. We both had to sit with people with different views and try to create a consensus. I understand that this is what is happening here. We will see the results."
