Giorgia Meloni is not afraid of provocations.
She chose May 1, while the Italian unions marched, to convene an extraordinary Council of Ministers and announce a radical slashing of social benefits.
Among the measures presented were a relaxation of the conditions of employment on a fixed-term contract, reductions in employer charges, but above all, which triggered an outcry, the abolition of the “citizenship income”.
This universal allowance of 550 euros on average benefited 1.6 million households last year, particularly in the poorer south of the peninsula.
It was the flagship measure introduced in 2019 by the 5-Star Movement, the populist left-wing party in decline.
According to the Italian Institute of Statistics, it has lifted 1 million people out of poverty.
The former 5-star Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, denounces a reform of Meloni which
"condemns young people to precariousness for life"
