Cannibalistic fish with teeth like daggers appear on the coast: fear and bewilderment among experts

Finding of the cannibal fish in the water and in kilometers of beach generates confusion among biologists.

the strange apparition

of

 cannibalistic fish

with teeth like daggers and extremely elusive, along kilometers of the coast, causes

bewilderment among biology experts.

Officials of the Oregon State Parks (OSP), USA, communicated on their social networks that specimens of

lancet fish

(

Alepisaurus ferox

) have appeared on the state's beaches in recent weeks.

The strange appearance and stranding of these notorious cannibalistic fish,

with giant eyes and dagger-like fangs

, along a 290-kilometre stretch of coastline has experts baffled.

How is the lancet or cannibal fish

According to information provided by the

US

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

(NOAA)

, these fish live in tropical and subtropical waters at

depths between 200 and 1,000 meters.

They are known to migrate as far north as the Bering Sea to feed.

Also, they enlarge, growing up to

two meters long

and have a sail-shaped fin that extends almost the entire body.

Another distinctive feature is that it does not

have scales

, it has pores on its lateral line and its muscles are gelatinous, adds the

RT porta.

Confusion of biologists in the US

"No one is sure why they are coming to shore

," the OSP officials said from their Facebook profile.

Daniel J. Kamikawa

, a NOAA biologist, commented to

LiveScience

that "strandings in Oregon and elsewhere

are not exactly common or regular

."

The specialist suggests that among the possible explanations for these strandings could be

disabling diseases

, the drag effect

of storms

or a phenomenon known as temperature shock.

The reference in this last point has to do when a fish is suddenly exposed to a body of water that is much colder than its normal temperature range, they emphasize.

In the US, the coast was filled with lancet fish.

"This puts the fish

into 'shock'

and can greatly incapacitate and be fatal," Kamikawa said.

But, anyway, they are unproven theories and the appearance of cannibal fish, for sure, remains a mystery.
