Against the backdrop of a post from King Charles' coronation that the British footballer posted, users accused: "Licking his way to the knighthood" • His wife Victoria was also criticized online: "It won't help you to ingratiate yourself here"

Like many millions in the United Kingdom, footballer David Beckham was moved by the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla on Saturday. But not everyone shared the footballer's paragon and he found himself snatching a painful own goal from the surfers.

"Today our country comes together to celebrate the coronation of His Majesty King Charles and Queen Camilla," Beckham wrote in an emotional post alongside photos of the king.

While the post has garnered more than 700,<> likes, many of the thousands of comments have been directed at Beckham, claiming that his comments are defiant and do not represent the mood of all citizens. Users accused that this was mainly a flattery move intended to promote him on the coveted list for knighthood from the royal family, which he has been rumoured to have been hoping to receive for many years without success.

"Licking his way to one post-cringe knighthood after another," a user scoffed. "Stop begging for a title. It's pathetic," others added. "Every time he flatters them like that, I'm embarrassed for him all over again," wrote another, while another concluded: "Charles, just give him the title already. He's begging."

Beckham's wife, Victoria, who met Charles somewhere in the late '90s with her Spice Girls bandmates, didn't get a finger from the talkbackers, and her separate Instagram post also drew quite a few bites about her husband's remarks. "It won't help you to ingratiate yourself here. He still won't get the knighthood," mocked commenters, with a cynical user writing: "Imagine what would happen there at their house if she got the title and he didn't."

The Beckhams have a strong affection for the royal family and over the years have met with various family members on several occasions and expressed great appreciation for their work. The two also attended Harry and Meghan's wedding, and David paid his last respects to Queen Elizabeth after her death by standing in line for 13 hours to walk past her coffin.

In the meantime, it seems, Beckham will have to settle for the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire that he received from the late Queen in 2003 and remember that for Victoria he will always be king...
