Munich/Rothley – Madeleine McCann has been missing for over 16 years. Every year on 3 May, family, friends, residents and compassionate people gather for a vigil in her hometown of Rothley (County Leicestershire). Previously, her parents had made people sit up and take notice. They expect a breakthrough in the investigation. On May 3, 2007, the then three-year-old was kidnapped.

When Maddie disappeared from her holiday home in Praia da Luz, Portugal, her siblings were lying next to her. Twins Sean and Amelie were in the same room, but were spared. The two are now 18 years old, and their sister would celebrate her 12th birthday on May 2023, 20.

At the vigil on May 3, 2023, Amelie McCann appeared in public for the first time. Her brother, on the other hand, continued to stay away from him.

Amelie didn't look for the spotlight either, writes mother Kate now. "I'm sending this message and I hope it will awaken some people's consciences," she complains via Facebook and the website findmadeleine.com. The day of the vigil was a special experience, the family was very happy about the hope and warmth of those present, she explains, but one man went too far.
"She doesn't want to be photographed or interviewed and has been put in an awkward position, especially at such a special moment of hope for Madeleine."

"It's nice that everyone has come together here. But it's a sad occasion," the local journalist quoted 18-year-old Amelie as saying in The Mirror newspaper. In addition, numerous photos of the teenager were published.

"Our son and daughter turned 18 this year – I very much hope that she doesn't make this the target of journalists who are only looking for financial profit," Kate appeals: "I can only ask you to respect the privacy of our children and let them live their lives."
Sean and Amelie grew up knowing that their sister was missing. The twins knew everything about their missing sister, mother Kate said in an interview in February 2016. At that time, the children were eleven years old.
The case of Madeleine McCann is currently also occupying German authorities. The Braunschweig Regional Court rejected an indictment against the suspect, saying the court was "not competent". The man was to be charged with another offense. He is already in custody for other crimes. (moe)
