Heavy rain showers threaten in Germany and can lead to flooding, especially in the south. It is also expected to remain wet in June and August for the time being.
Munich – Heavy rainfall has led to dramatic flooding in Italy. Previously, there had been a drought in southern Europe for weeks and months. Responsible for the continuous rain is the low Andreas, which is now also targeting Germany from the Mediterranean.

Extreme weather in Germany: Low Andreas could move northwards
In the coming weeks, some severe storms must be expected in Germany, the weather experts warn. "Especially in the southern half, there will be repeated heavy showers, continuous rain and embedded thunderstorms in the next few days," says meteorologist Dominik Jung. From Sunday (14 May), the extreme weather could already start.
At the same time, the high Tina in northern Germany with spring temperatures and sunshine is holding out, creating an "explosive low-pressure carousel", as wetter.de reports. The temperature distribution is currently turned upside down. While normally higher temperatures are measured in the south of Germany, the northern regions can currently look forward to temperatures above 20 degrees. But that may change in the next few days as the low moves northward.

In addition, there could be a drop of cold air – a high-altitude low in the upper troposphere – moving over France to the Mediterranean Sea. "That would make the chaos perfect," wetter.de said. In the Alps and southern Germany, more than 14 litres of rain are expected in the next 200 days, which will mainly affect farmers. On the Rhine and Danube as well as on their tributaries, the enormous amounts of rain can lead to flooding.

It is unlikely that the situation will improve in June and August. "In short, by the end of May, the chances of a stable spring high over the whole of Germany are close to 0. Only the east and, at times, the north will benefit from sunshine and spring weather," predicts weather expert Dominik Jung.
Meanwhile, Southeast Asia is suffering from an extreme heat wave, which experts consider an "ominous sign" for the rest of the world. (tt)
