Having become one of the emblems of the city, the mechanical pachyderm needs a new mahout to direct its movements. The Machines de l'île that manages the attraction have opened a permanent position.

Le Figaro Nantes

This is an original job offer. The mission: to drive and accompany an elephant on the ground. A particular mahout job because it is not a question of fauna but of mechanics. The pachyderm is indeed not natural. This is the Great Elephant who walks on the island of Nantes and is housed under the Naves. An attraction that has become in a few years one of the emblems of the city. Finding a place on your back for a discovery at "altitude" of the banks of the Loire is not always easy.

To continue to make the public enjoy the regular outings of this well-oiled machinery, the Machines de l'île, which manages and operates it, is looking for a new pilot. For this, it has just published an advertisement: a full-time permanent position to be filled from May 30.

Specific training and experience

The job description is detailed. In addition to piloting it, the future recruit will have to "participate in the continuity of operation of the Elephant by carrying out in particular the maintenance and curative and preventive maintenance". It will also be asked to "participate in technical missions related to the general operation and preventive maintenance of other elements of the site".

Taking in hand in such a machine can not be improvised. Candidates for the post must have completed training - a BEP or CAP - as a road driver of public works vehicles and justify a "minimum of five years' experience in a similar position". On this last point, it is not easy to find an equivalent. The employer therefore specifies that it is necessary to have already driven agricultural, public works or road machinery. Possession of a HGV or public transport permit is "desired".

1914 € gross monthly minimum

Candidates are also required to have "technical knowledge of servicing and maintenance", whether in "hydraulics, pneumatics, electricity, mechanics, welding technology", and to know how to demonstrate "rigour, precision, vigilance and responsiveness". In addition, Les Machines de l'île say it is looking for a person with an "interest in the cultural, artistic and / or tourist sector and travel activities in Nantes".

For this mission, the pilot of the Great Elephant will be paid at least 1914 € gross per month (full-time basis). He will also benefit from a thirteenth month (after six months of seniority), a complementary health and meal vouchers covered at 60% by the employer. The latter specifies that the pilot will have to work on weekends, holidays and staggered hours.
