After about 15 years, the Nuremberg delicatessen DelikatEssen has come to an end. In an interview with Merkur.de, owner Romana Schemm gives reasons for the exit.
Nuremberg – Travel guides of the same name say that the delicatessen DelikatEssen is one of the "places of happiness in Nuremberg". One of the "111 shops that you must have experienced in Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen," it says elsewhere. The shop at the wine market is more than just an insider tip. The business, which was founded around 15 years ago, has developed into one of the largest contact points for delicatessen in the region. An impression that owner Romana Schemm confirms in an interview with Merkur.de. Despite "beautiful" past years: The specialty store has to close on July 1st.
"Sales declined": Nuremberg delicatessen closes after 15 years
"It was a wonderful time," Romana Schemm sums up. The owner of DelikatEssen is 67 years old. 15 years ago, she opened the delicatessen with her husband in the middle of Nuremberg's city center. She has seen many enthusiastic customers coming and going in her store in recent years. Despite a time she doesn't want to miss, the decision has been made: the popular Nuremberg specialty store will close on July 1, 2023. On the one hand, for reasons of age, on the other hand, and this is the main reason – because the Ukraine war and the inflation crisis are also leaving their mark on delicatessen.

What had shaken their business in recent weeks and months: "Sales declined," Schemm told our editorial team about the causal problem. The high costs, as a reflection of an ongoing "negative development", have already resulted in numerous closures in the region in the recent past. Examples include Nuremberg's cult bar Trocadéro or Gasthaus Pegnitztal, which announced the next closure of restaurants in Nuremberg in December 2022. Now the crisis is also hitting the popular delicatessen in Nuremberg's old town.
"Where should I shop now?": Delicatessen in Nuremberg to close on July 1, 2023
"Why should I build up a minus?" asks the long-time owner of DelikatEssen. With regard to running costs, the 67-year-old could not "wait five years for things to get better". It took a decision – and an alternative for regular customers in the future if they want to buy pesto, sausages or vegans in Middle Franconia's largest city. Together with her husband, Romana Schemm decided to end the chapter of the business.
"Where should I shop now?" – a question that Schemm had often heard from her customers in recent days. At least until the beginning of July, the address will continue to be at Weinmarkt 14 – always between Wednesday and Saturday, when Romana Schemm will greet her customers as usual.
