"No one is working there today": BRB between strike and hacker attack

2023-05-15T19:07:03.837Z

Highlights: The strike at Deutsche Bahn has been cancelled – but almost nothing was going on at Bayerische Regiobahn on Monday. The reason was the strike of the EVG union. In the Augsburg/Ammersee network, strike participation is almost 100 percent, reported Munich-based EVG boss Isidoro Peronace. Unlike DB, the collective bargaining dispute at BRB is not mainly about the minimum wage. Rather, the main demand is a wage increase of at least 650 euros or 12 percent.

The strike at Deutsche Bahn has been cancelled – but almost nothing was going on at Bayerische Regiobahn on Monday. The reason was the strike of the EVG union.

Munich/Holzkirchen – "All five networks are affected," regretted BRB press spokeswoman Annette Luckner. Also on Tuesday (16 May) there will be a strike until midnight. In addition, after a hacker attack, the website is disrupted – so that passengers were sometimes not informed about the few trains that did run.

Only a few trains are running: strike participation at almost 100 percent in some places

While the train drivers at Deutsche Bahn traditionally tend to be more inclined to compete and are organized in the German Locomotive Drivers' Union, the BRB train drivers are usually members of the EVG. In the Augsburg/Ammersee network, strike participation is almost 100 percent, reported Munich-based EVG boss Isidoro Peronace. Yesterday he visited the BRB headquarters in Holzkirchen and saw for himself.

Only a few hired train drivers are on duty. The BRB workshop in Augsburg also participated completely. "No one is working there today," Peronace said. The same situation in the Oberland: In the morning, the former BOB failed completely, only in the afternoon there were isolated trains. The situation was similar in the Rosenheim/Chiemgau network and in the Berchtesgadener Land.

Dispute with Transdev: BRB's parent company "made a worse offer"

The background to the strike is collective bargaining disputes. EVG is currently negotiating with almost 50 railway companies, including Deutsche Bahn and Transdev, the parent company of BRB. While the strike at DB was averted at the weekend, this was not the case at Transdev. "Transdev made a worse offer than DB AG," Peronace said. Unlike DB, the collective bargaining dispute at BRB is not mainly about the minimum wage. Rather, they are still far apart on the main demand, a wage increase of at least 650 euros or 12 percent.

Hacker attack at Transdev: Website temporarily unavailable

A lot is coming together at Transdev at the moment. For more than a month, the company has been fighting the consequences of a hacker attack. On April 5 and again on the Easter weekend, there was a so-called DDoS attack, which was mainly directed against the website of NordWestBahn, based in Osnabrück, but apparently also affected the websites of other Transdev subsidiaries. The attack lasted more than 24 hours before it was repelled.

An inquiry by our media group about this incident at the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) initially remained unanswered. "Personal data or company data has not been compromised," the company told Transdev. However, the defensive measures have been ramped up to such an extent that even ordinary users can hardly reach the websites. And this is still the case today. "Since we cannot rule out the possibility of being attacked again, the measures will be maintained for the time being. Due to the defensive measures, individual websites may sometimes become unavailable."

Transdev was probably not the only company attacked. "There have been a number of attacks across Europe that are suspected to be related to the Ukraine war," the press office reports. "Other transport companies, authorities and public institutions were affected."
