Break or continuity? Turkish voters will again go to the polls on 28th May next, as they have not been able to decide on 14th May between the opposition candidate, Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, and the Islamo-nationalist Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in power for twenty years, who came out ahead with 49.51% of the vote and gave him favourite in the second round. While around two o'clock in the morning, the latter celebrated the "unity" of Turkey from the balcony of the headquarters of his party, the AKP, in Ankara, the supporters of change said they were "ready to fight to the end".
Throughout the evening, the two clans had engaged in a battle of numbers, instructing their respective observers to monitor the count "to the end", while recounts were already underway. A long and laborious process: more than 60 million voters were called to vote in this election marked by a record turnout, approaching 90%. Proof that in Turkey, faith in the possibility of change...
