On May 7, 2021, Trevor Mulllax's friends called 911 to report that the man was suffering from a mental health crisis, was armed and had suicidal intent. Minutes later, officers arrived at the family's property and shot Mullinax, who was in a vehicle and talking to his mother, standing outside the car, nearly 50 times.
What happened is still confusing. The family says Mulllax's friends had provided the emergency operator with the man's and his mother's numbers so they could be contacted. The police maintain that they did not receive that information.
Mullinax was also in a mental health crisis following a previous incident, which had led to an arrest warrant for robbery being lifted. The York County sheriff maintains that Mullinax raised a gun when he saw the officers, prompting them to fire.
The man was taken to hospital and survived, despite receiving at least nine gunshot wounds, three of them to the head. Now, he and his mother, Tammy Beason, have gone public that they will sue the sheriff's office for using excessive force against them.
