If Biden's administration does not agree with the Republicans in the US Congress to raise the debt ceiling, there is a risk of default.
Washington - US President Joe Biden has canceled planned visits to Australia and Papua New Guinea due to a looming budget crisis in the United States. The White House said on Tuesday that Biden would not travel on after the G7 summit in Japan in view of the unresolved dispute over the debt ceiling in the United States, but would return from Hiroshima to Washington.
Shortly before, according to the Republican chairman of the House of Representatives, there had been progress in the negotiations. An agreement in view of the looming budget crisis this week is a possibility, Kevin McCarthy said on Tuesday after a high-level meeting with Biden, among others, at the White House. However, he also emphasized that Democrats and Republicans are still far apart. Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer described the meeting in the Oval Office as "good and productive."
The background to this is that the US government is threatened with a default in a few days if Biden's administration does not agree with the Republicans in the US Congress to raise the debt ceiling. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that such a move could occur as early as June 1. Dpa
