Controversy in Colombia: The office of President Gustavo Petro announced on Thursday the rescue of four children from the scene of a light plane crash, after they were declared missing two weeks ago. However, the military, which the president said was behind the children's location, said it was not familiar with the reports.
The crash of a Cessna 206 light plane with seven people on board, including four children from an indigenous tribe from the Amazon region, has aroused great interest in the country. "After an arduous search by our military, we have found the four missing children alive after the plane crash in Guaviera, this is a happy moment for the country," the president's office said in a statement.
However, state media released a statement by senior military sources saying that there was still no confirmation that the children had been found and were safe and sound. According to reports in the country, three adults, including the pilot of the plane, were killed in the crash but the children, including children aged 13, nine, four and an 11-month-old baby, got out of the plane and went looking for help.
The site where the plane crashed, the Sirinea de Chiribect Nature Reserve, is characterized by dense and impassable jungles, and hundreds of soldiers and Air Force personnel were deployed to find the children. So far, searchers, who used dogs, have found a bottle of the baby and a pair of scissors. They also found makeshift shelter and leftover fruit left behind by the children. The plane itself was also found with the bodies of the three dead.
