Three out of twelve hotspot locations in the district town will be abandoned.

Starnberg – The Main and Finance Committee of the Starnberg City Council has decided to terminate three locations for public Wi-Fi in the city area. These include Wittelsbacherstraße 1 (Schuh-Linse), the Munich Rowing and Sailing Club "Bayern" (MRSV) at Seepromenade 2 and Maximilianstraße 6 (Rupprecht bookstore). The decision to terminate the sites as of October 1 was made unanimously and without discussion this week.

In 2017, the first public hotspot of the Bayern-WLAN, which is funded by the Free State of Bavaria, was opened in Starnberg. By 2021, the company had expanded to currently twelve locations. The city administration estimated the total cost of their operation at 17,600 euros per year in the meeting template. For the past year, it also presented a usage evaluation. According to the study, the Strandcafé location (Seepromenade 4) had the highest value with more than 54,000 uses, which is mainly due to its proximity to the train station and the resulting access by commuters and travellers. As far as the amount of downloads and uploads is concerned, the location at the seaside resort (Strandbadstraße 17) was the most popular. Last year, 1800 gigabytes of downloads and 400 gigabytes of uploads were registered there. On the other hand, the locations at the MRSV and at the Museum Starnberger See (Possenhofener Straße 5), each with around 2000 to 5000 uses, were hardly used.

The decision to part with the three locations was justified by the administration with cost savings of around 3500 euros per year – and individual circumstances. At the MRSV, the number of hits was low, and the Schuh-Linse building is to be demolished and replaced by a new building. And Maximilianstraße 6 is not a municipal facility, which is also not in the immediate vicinity of a public square, according to the administration. The one-time dismantling costs about 500 to 1500 euros per location.

The locations at the beach café, the seaside resort and the museum as well as at the church square (Wittelsbacherstraße 9), at the VR-Bank (Tutzinger-Hof-Platz 8), at the Undosa (lake promenade 1), at the lake bar (lake promenade 1a), at the city library (Hauptstraße 10) and at the youth club Nepomuk (Nepomukweg 19) will be retained. horsepower
