2023-05-20T18:10:03.486Z

Highlights: Geretsried secondary school recently invited the "Eukitea" theatre again. All sixth-graders got to see the play "I like you" and then held a workshop with the actors. The pain and isolation of the victim are portrayed very believably. The event was financially and personally supported by the "Respect Coaches" of the Federal Youth Migration Services Programme. It is important to empower young people, says Rector Christine Venus-Michel, who is in charge of education at the school.

Cyberbullying is and remains an issue among young people. That's why the Geretsried secondary school recently invited the "Eukitea" theatre again.

Geretsried – Despite all the information, cyberbullying is and remains an issue among young people. For this reason, the secondary school recently invited the theatre "Eukitea" from Diedorf once again to perform the play "I like you". All sixth-graders got to see it in the auditorium and then held a workshop with the actors to deepen the topic.

Raising awareness of cyberbullying

The three-member ensemble knew how to inspire the students with great talent and simple means and to make them feel the fate of a victim of cyberbullying. A wonderful idea was the pantomime representation of emojis, such as the waving figure or the thumbs-up symbol.

Teens are online every day

Like almost everyone her age, 15-year-old Samira and her friends in the play are online every day. Actually, they move routinely and safely on the World Wide Web. They surf, chat, post and play – and thanks to their smartphones, they are constantly connected to each other. But when Samira, angered at her boyfriend Luke, who broke up with her, publishes a humiliating photo of him (his "Little Luke"), doom takes its course. The photo spreads rapidly on the Internet and is commented on accordingly. At first, Luke is happy about the many likes and "LOLs". But soon it is also said: "What an idiot" or "It's your own fault, you victim". After four days, Luke has 948 likes. "I don't know that many people," he says rather thoughtfully.

You can tell how great the need to talk is.

Respect coach Elke Blank about the workshops

In real life, the teenager soon finds himself alone. What was meant to be a little revenge develops more and more into a nightmare and even seems to slip away from the perpetrators. The pain and isolation of the victim are portrayed very believably. The friends have to realize how difficult it is to delete a picture once it has circulated on the net.

The event was financially and personally supported by the "Respect Coaches" of the Federal Youth Migration Services Programme. Prevention and education are crucial points in digitization, emphasizes Rector Christine Venus-Michel. For this reason, the topic of cyberbullying is also deepened in workshops in small groups. "You can tell how great the need to talk often is," says Respect coach Elke Blank, who conducted the workshops together with the Eukitea team. Parents would also be sensitized to the problem at a parents' evening, says Venus-Michel. It is important to empower young people. In addition to the teachers, the contact persons at the school are the liaison teachers, the school psychologist and the school social worker.
