Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Sunday morning the capture of the city of Bakhmut by the Russian army, after ten months of bloody battle that resulted in the complete destruction of the city and heavy losses on both sides.
A statement posted on the Kremlin's official website on behalf of the Russian president said: "The head of state commends the members of the Wagner attack group and members of the Russian army who provided them with the assistance and cover on the flanks, after the completion of the liberation of Artyomsk (Bakhhot)."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also acknowledged that the city fell to the Russian army during a meeting with US President Joe Biden at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan. In response to a journalist's question, Zelensky said: "We do not have a military presence in Bakhmut, but it remains in our hearts."
