Polymethylmethacrylate, better known as PMMA, is a plastic component. That and industrial silicone was applied three years ago by Lygia Fazio, a renowned 40-year-old Brazilian model and influencer. The reason? He wanted to enlarge his buttocks. The cosmetic surgery caused complications throughout her body. Last year she was hospitalized for 100 days. His situation worsened three weeks ago when he suffered a stroke that he could not resist and ended up dying last Wednesday in a hospital in São Paulo.
It was three years of suffering and regret. It all started in 2020, when the model and mother of two boys (David and Thor) had an implant to enlarge her buttocks. For this, PMMA and industrial silicone were applied. The substances ended up spreading throughout his body and caused multiple infections.
Thus, he had to undergo several surgical procedures to extract the materials. Last year, she was hospitalized for 100 days. "How I would like to go back in time. I was like that. Unknowingly, I applied PMMA and silicone and almost died. I am grateful to the Lord for being alive. And for helping many people not to go through what I went through," he had posted on his Instagram upon receiving the medical discharge.
However, it had to remain under control. And his health condition worsened three weeks ago when he suffered a stroke that ended his life. His death was announced this week on the model's own profile.
"Unfortunately our warrior passed away. Thank you for all the support," read the message written by George, who was using his sister's social network to give updates on his health status since his hospitalization. This Thursday, friends and family said goodbye to her at the Valle dos Reis cemetery in Taboão da Serra, municipality of São Paulo.

Many of her relatives took to social networks to mourn the death of the influencer and criticize the use of PMMA. Lygia was also a journalist. She worked as a stage assistant in the television program Legendários of RecordTV.
"How long are these killer doctors going to put PPMA on people? That is a crime. It has to be banned. Rest in peace, Lygia," journalist Flávia Noronha posted. "Only those who followed your struggle know what a warrior you were in recent years. Rest in peace, my dear," her colleague Ana Paula Minerato posted.
According to journalist Meiri Borges, a friend of Lygia, the "time bomb of her life" was the use of "industrial silicone mixed with PMMA" through clandestine procedures.

In an interview with local media outlet g1, Meiri Borges recounted details of Lygia's struggle. "It all started because a substance was put in the body to enlarge the tail. She always sought perfection, she always wanted to look prettier, feel better about her body, and for that she sought help from people who were not professionals," he revealed.
He called those interventions "the time bomb of his life." In this regard, he confessed: "That product, which was industrial silicone mixed with PMMA, began to spread throughout his body, causing bacteria, infections and many problems for his life."
PMMA, an unauthorized component
The plastic surgeon Víctor Hugo Cordeiro warned that PPMA is indicated in very few cases, where it is used to improve the contour and anatomy of patients who suffered lipodystrophies and alterations caused by the use of drugs for the treatment of the HIV virus.
"It is contraindicated by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery for large volumes, and that is recurrent. Unfortunately it happened a long time ago, problems with complications of PMMA, "said the specialist in statements reproduced by Correio Braziliense.

He explained that it is a plastic material, therefore, the substance is not absorbed by the body, so all the content that infiltrates and spreads through the subcutaneous or muscular tissue can become infected.
"The biggest complication is that it is very difficult to remove a completely infiltrated tissue. From the moment it is placed, it becomes theoretically inert. However, an infection or a very severe inflammatory reaction can lead to complications and a tendency to expel tissue, surgeries to remove and reconstruct tissue, which can cause serious infections, which can lead to sepsis and death," he concluded.
