Kafkaesque story: The Tarika family cannot immigrate to Israel because of a computer malfunction | Israel Hayom

Highlights: A Jewish family from Argentina wishing to immigrate to Israel cannot reach Israel due to an unusual bureaucratic entanglement. The reason for the upset is the fact that Junes Tarika's father immigrated to Israel with his family in the past, and then returned to Argentina. For more than a month, the Tarika family has been stuck "on crates," and the Population and Immigration Authority and the Foreign Ministry have thrown responsibility between them. After Israel Hayom intervened in the incident, various sources reported that the mess was over and that Jones had received immigrant status.

The house in Psagot is ready, the apartment in Argentina is "on crates" - but an unusual bureaucratic tangle prevents the family from entering Israel • Population Authority: "The issue is being addressed"

A Jewish family from Argentina wishing to immigrate to Israel cannot reach Israel due to an unusual bureaucratic entanglement. For more than a month, the Tarika family has been stuck "on crates," and the Population and Immigration Authority and the Foreign Ministry have thrown responsibility between them.

The reason for the upset is the fact that Junes Tarika's father immigrated to Israel with his family in the past, and then returned to Argentina. In 1974, Alberto Tarica immigrated to Israel, but since he did not get along in Israel, he returned to his home country. In 2015, he visited Israel on a trip. Alberto's children were born and raised in Argentina.

Last May, Juanes Tarika, Alberto's son, and his wife Orit reported to the Israeli consulate in Buenos Aires. The two decided to immigrate to Israel, so it was necessary to arrange his Israeli passport and define him as an immigrant under the Law of Return.

A caravan in the settlement of Psagot in Binyamin was already ready for the couple to live in when they arrived in Israel - but then they encountered an unexpected bump.

The Israeli consulate clerk entered Junes' details and informed him that she could not load his data. The reason, she claimed, was that, according to the system, Junes' father lived in Israel from 1974 to 2015, so that Junes cannot be defined as an immigrant.

The fact that Jones' parents and two brothers immigrated to Israel in 2022 did not change the computerized system, and it was not possible to issue him an Israeli passport and define him as a new immigrant.

About a month has passed since then, but the bureaucratic tangle has not been solved. In every appeal to the Foreign Ministry, he was told that there was still no solution, and he had to wait for the moment and hope that somehow the mess would end and he would be allowed to immigrate to Israel.

It should be noted that there is no dispute that Hunes is entitled to the Law of Return, and that it is clear to all that this is a mistake, but despite this, the relevant factors are delayed and do not allow him to immigrate to Israel.

After Israel Hayom intervened in the incident, various sources reported that the mess was over and that Jones had received approval for immigrant status.

But an asterisk should be placed on this claim. Following Israel Hayom's request, the relevant authorities did indeed contact Hunes, but according to the family, their demands cause his immigration to Israel to be delayed for many more weeks, even though there is no actual justification for this.

The Population and Immigration Authority said in response: "An examination of the application indicates that this is a person entitled to return who submitted an application for status at the Israeli consulate in Buenos Aires. The matter is being dealt with by the Foreign Ministry, and we will update the embassy when there is a response to it. He must be in contact with the Israeli delegation."
