What are obese boot camps?

In 2010, the routine of a Chinese boy who was sent by his parents to a training camp similar to the one attended by Cuihua became known.

Shun, who weighed 67 kilos at age 11, was enrolled in the Beijing Gymnasium to undergo a strict routine. He was one of 12 million obese children in China that year.

To go to the Beijing Gymnasium he got up at seven in the morning in a hotel near the sports center. At 9.30 he started exercising for two hours, then he had lunch and at 13.45 he returned to do activities for two more hours. He ran on a treadmill, lifted weights and practiced aerobic exercises. In total I had four hours a day of gym.

In 15 days, Shun dropped to 61.5 kilograms.

In 2010, the number of obese children in China was one-third of the total worldwide, according to a study by the China Association for Student Nutrition and Health Promotion.

Experts attributed the weight gain of young Chinese to the country's economic rise, changing eating habits, fast food and sedentary practices.

The most recent official data, from 2004, cited by the Xinhua news agency, indicate that the number of overweight people in China, with 1.300 billion inhabitants, was 200 million in 2002, 39% more than in 1992.
