The glass ceiling was breached today (Monday), when student Hadas Kormesh Belisha was elected head of the student union at Bar Ilan University. This is the first time a woman will hold the position since the establishment of the institution. This is a university that is identified with the national religious public and the knitted kippahs.
Students Hadas Kormesh Balisha, from the Faculty of Political Science and Communication, and Orel Yosef, from the Faculty of Law and Philosophy, are the representatives elected to head the student union. Those who ran against them in the elections were the chairman and deputy who had served for the past two years.
A total of 4218 students voted in the elections, and Kormesh and Yousef received 50.11% of the vote.

"I am grateful for the opportunity I received to serve as Chairman of the Student Union at Bar-Ilan University," said Kormesh Belisha, "I would like to thank mainly the students who chose and believed in us. As someone who works to promote women in the public sphere, I am excited to be the first woman to serve in this position. I would like to thank my deputy, Orel Yosef, and the outgoing chairman after two years of work." Over the past year, Kormesh Belisha has led the "Young Female Politicians" program at the university and came several times this year to the Knesset committees for the advancement of the status of women to speak on behalf of the organization.
