Riots at a women's prison in Honduras have killed at least 41 people, authorities said Tuesday.
The work of identifying the dead at Centro Femenino de Adaptacion Social prison, where about 900 women are usually held, is still underway as of this morning. The prison is about 20 kilometers from the capital city of Tegucigalpa.
Some of the victims died of burns while others died from gunfire. The prisoners' families union told Reuters that the incident actually started with a mass brawl inside the prison in the early hours of the morning between two gangs, Barrio 18 and MS-13, although authorities gave no details beyond that there had been a riot. It is unclear if there are also guards killed.
Honduras has a bloody history of prison riots. In 2012, 18 died in a similar event, while in 2012 over 350 died due to a fire.
