In diplomacy, appearances are sometimes deceiving. Officially, Giorgia Meloni's first visit to Paris since her election in autumn 2022, was made in a "peaceful" atmosphere, in the words of a diplomat. Coming to defend Rome's candidacy for the 2030 World Expo, the President of the Italian Council met Emmanuel Macron to prepare the next European Council and the NATO summit in Vilnius.
The two countries are forced to cooperate on many issues: immigration, Europe's financial architecture, stability in North Africa. They are on the same line with regard to Ukraine and have sealed their supposed reconciliation with a common gift to Ukraine, the Franco-Italian air defense system Mamba. The two capitals are linked by an economic and cultural relationship deemed "irreversible" by an Italian diplomat.
