Orian Ben Kalifa was convicted last May • She was returned to Border Police service despite her conviction

A court on Tuesday sentenced policewoman Orian Ben Kalifa after convicting her in May of assaulting Hala Salim during an operation at the Lions' Gate.

Ben Kalifa was sentenced today to a lenient sentence: a fine of 4,000 shekels or 40 days in prison in return. She was also sentenced to eight months' imprisonment, suspended for three years, for a felony offense of violence against the body. She was also sentenced to four months' imprisonment, suspended for three years, for a misdemeanor offense of violence against the body. She will pay compensation to the victim of the crime in the amount of NIS 3,2.

On the other hand, she was acquitted on suspicion of obstruction of justice, after she was also accused of giving a false report about the sequence of events during her interrogation.

In their verdict last May, the judges wrote that "the defendant hurried to use force, even though at that stage she did not have the authority to do so. She pushed the complainant several times with her body and pushed the complainant's brother with her hands around his neck. She shouted curses at the complainant, knocked her to the floor and tried to grab her hands to arrest her, while the complainant resisted arrest. During the tussle between them, the scarf covering the complainant's head came loose, and the defendant gripped the complainant's neck tightly."

Israel Hayom reported that despite her being convicted of assault, the commander of the Border Police decided to return Orian Ben Kalifa to service. She was reinstated to her post at Border Police headquarters pending the conclusion of the legal proceedings still pending against her. Border Police Commander Maj. Gen. Amir Cohen said, "Throughout the legal proceedings, commanders and professional elements in the force accompanied the fighter Orian and will continue to accompany her throughout the entire process. The IAF's fighters face many missions and complex challenges at all times, and this is why we train and train our fighters and commanders." Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai explained the move: "We must all remember that police activity is complex and challenging, and police officers are forced to deal with difficult situations."
