By making his strawberry pie like a "fruit basket", did Cédric Grolet think he would unleash so much passion on the Twittersphere? Perhaps he hoped so, but certainly not for the reasons that are currently shaking him up. It all starts with a video of influencer Clara Marz shared on Monday, June 19. The young woman, who was celebrating her birthday, had wanted to treat herself to the famous pastry of the star chef, particularly known for its trompe-l'oeil fruits, before debriefing on the said creation with her subscribers. "In real 80 euros, six people, the price does not shock me, it is 13 euros and some the share, we know why we go to Cédric Grolet," she explains in a story, facing her dessert.

In video, how to succeed in your pastry cream?
A sentence that was enough to launch the controversy, arousing the indignation of Internet users as well as a wave of mockery on the Web. If it should be noted that the pastry chef, followed by nearly 7.6 million subscribers on Instagram, carries out with his teams a real work of goldsmith on his creations, with high-flying products, the cost of the famous pie has nevertheless shocked. "There is an influencer who bought a strawberry pie Cedric Grolet at 80 €, and it's not she says "we can say oulah it's expensive but in reality it comes back to 13.30 € the share", cousin it's expensive, ptdrrr, "writes a user. "I still don't question that Cédric Grolet serves this and calls it "luxury pastry" at 80 €," adds a user. And an umpteenth: "80 euros the pie, 13.30 euros the share for that?".
Untrimmed strawberries
Because beyond the price, it is also the appearance of said pie that left Internet users speechless. Inspired by a fruit basket, Cédric Grolet's creation offers shortbread dough topped with a pastry cream, itself embellished with fresh strawberries, some of which are not trimmed. The brutalist approach of the aesthete chief has apparently not touched Internet users, many of whom have been amused by this bias. "Apricot pie Cédric Grolet way, €79.99, So appetizing," posted a Twitter user, under a photo showing a slice of bread accompanied by two intact apricots. And another, to take a picture of a crate of strawberries, captioned as follows: "Sell this pie Cédric Grolet at 550 €. Price to be discussed'.
The icing on the cake, the influencer Clara Marz specifies in her video, that to the price and appearance (the pie was also broken on one of the sides), would have added a certain disappointment in terms of taste: "The shortbread is super salty and the heart too sweet," she argues in her story, which has since expired. Faced with this wave of reactions, pastry chefs - professional or amateur - took the opportunity to publish their own pies on the networks, generating a real movement. In the manner of the greatest pastry chefs, their strawberries are carefully cut, in the shape of a rosette, sprinkled with mint or basil, in much more conventional visuals.
