A 51-year-old woman abandoned her granddaughter at a U.S. airport and boarded her flight but was detained by police.
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon, when airline employees found a girl, who according to news reports was 8 years old, crying and claiming for her parents, in a terminal of the giant George Bush International Airport in Houston.
The girl, who speaks Spanish, was assisted by an interpreter. She said she had been in the care of her grandmother, who eventually dropped her off there and went to board her flight.
Unscrupulous grandmother
"Allegedly, the girl was with her family, apparently the grandmother went to board the flight and, according to the minor, her parents had left the airport because they went to get their daughter's passport" that they forgot, said the director of communications of the Houston airport system, Augusto Bernal.
"The girl was left alone in the check-in lobby," he added. It was unclear if they would travel together.
With the girl's help, the parents were reached by phone and returned to look for her. According to press reports, the girl was carrying a piece of paper with her family's phone number.

"The grandmother, who had already boarded the plane, was taken off the plane and airport agents detained her," since the plane had not yet taken off, Bernal said. She was taken into custody by Houston police.
