Indian police have opened an investigation into a man who stayed in a five-star hotel for nearly two years and left without paying.

A tourist who booked a room for one day at the prestigious Rosette House Hotel, near the capital's Delhi airport, managed to stay there for nearly two years - without paying the bill. The police received a complaint when the hotel management discovered the scam 603 days late.

According to reports in the Indian Express newspaper, the same person, whose details have not been released, arrived at the hotel on May 30, 2019 for one night only - but stayed at the hotel until January 22, 2022. The hotel management filed a complaint with the police against the guest, and against several employees who they claimed assisted him. Although he did not pay, one member of staff appeared to extend his stay, partly by using other guests' accounts.

In connection with the complaint, the Indian media notes that according to the hotel's rules, in case of a guest who owes more than 50,<> rupees, the staff members are obligated to report the guest to the hotel management and demand payment for the stay.

But "in this case, this was not done," a senior police officer told the newspaper.

In any case, the media was not given the names of those suspected of assisting anyone, nor was the name of the man himself provided. In their complaint, the hotel managers stated to the police that for such a long stay at the hotel, the tourist had to pay 5 million rupees, which is about $70,<>
