Following last week's events in Jenin in which 10 Palestinians were killed, Qatar's ruler, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Athani, recently donated $2 million to associations and institutions in the city and in the Jenin refugee camp. The donation was made by Hussein Sheikh, secretary general of the PLO's Executive Committee and considered the number <> man in the Palestinian leadership.

It was not specified which institutions and associations would receive the generous donation. The grant comes against the backdrop of the discourse on the weakening of the Palestinian Authority and the rise of organizations and militias affiliated with Islamic Jihad, Hamas and Fatah in the city and its refugee camp. Ramallah has expressed displeasure in recent days with the sequence of events in Judea and Samaria: first, riots carried out by groups of extremist settlers in Palestinian villages in response to an attack near the community of Ali in which four Israelis were murdered, to Israel's announcement of the promotion of 1,000 construction units in Ali, to National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's call to "run to the hills" during his visit to the settlement outpost of Evyatar near Tapuach Junction.

Palestinian sources demanded that the US administration exert pressure on Israel in recent days to prevent further escalation on the ground. The messages were conveyed to Assistant Secretary of State Barbara Leaf, who heads a delegation visiting the region and met with senior Israeli and Palestinian officials.

Senior Palestinian officials said that what is happening on the ground, including calls in Israel to launch a large-scale operation to eradicate terrorism in northern Samaria, weakens the Palestinian Authority and its leadership, since it is portrayed as incapable of defending its people. It should be noted that there is growing concern in Israel's defense establishment about the Palestinian Authority's lack of governance in the northern parts of Judea and Samaria.

"Senior Israeli officials claim that the PA is incapable of controlling the West Bank and that it is on the way to collapse, forgetting that the main problem of our people is the occupation of our land," Hussein Sheikh tweeted over the weekend. "I ask: Can you stop the violence of armed settlers against innocent Palestinians? Israel must recognize that there is no alternative to a political solution that will end the occupation and establish a Palestinian state."

Qatar is considered a patron of the Muslim Brotherhood and its various branches, including Hamas. Relations between the Palestinian Authority and Qatar have been tense in recent years due to the latter's support for Hamas. Tensions between the two sides increased after Qatar refused to transfer the grant to the Gaza Strip through the Palestinian Authority. According to the understandings reached, 100,100 needy families in Gaza receive $<> each month.
