Emmanuel Macron said Sunday that the rebellion of the leader of the paramilitary group Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, "shows the divisions that exist within the Russian camp, the fragility of both its armies and its auxiliary forces," in an interview with La Provence.
In the aftermath of the abortive mutiny, the French head of state said he had "followed the events hour by hour, in connection with the main partners of the France", stressing a "situation that remains evolving". "All this must make us very vigilant and fully justifies the support we give to the Ukrainians in their resistance," added the President of the Republic.
Wagner folds
The forces of the Wagner paramilitary group gradually retreated to Russia after the abortive coup of Yevgeny Prigozhin, who was to leave for Belarus, without it being known when this exile-like departure was planned, nor where Wagner's tempestuous boss was.
On Sunday, the United States said the abortive mutiny challenged the authority of Russian President Vladimir Putin, revealing "cracks" at the highest levels of the state and forcing him to "defend" Moscow, in the words of Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

"We haven't seen the last act yet," he said, but "the fact that you have someone from the inside questioning Putin's authority and directly questioning why he launched this aggression against Ukraine, that's in itself something very powerful."
