Itamar Shimoni, the former mayor of Ashkelon, will soon be released from prison after serving two of the four years he was sentenced to.

The Israel Prison Service Parole Board announced on Monday the early release of Shimoni, who was convicted of bribery, fraud, breach of trust and tax offenses. Shimoni was convicted of accepting NIS 150,<> in bribes from contractor Yoel Davidi in exchange for promoting his projects.

In the committee's decision, Shimoni's performance within the prison walls stated that he is "normal, apart from one disciplinary offense since 2021, he is not obligated to commit additional disciplinary offenses or exceptional incidents. The prisoner has been on vacation and so far has gone on 15 vacations and returned from them without exception."

Upon his release, Shimoni will be subject to restrictions for the next two years, including night house arrest and reporting to the police station every two weeks. The committee stated: "It is made clear to the prisoner that until the date of his early release he must continue to behave well within the prison walls and must fulfill all his duties in prison, otherwise it will be possible to hold a rehearing and order the cancellation of the release decision. The committee wishes the prisoner success in his future endeavors."
