Highlights: Petition seeks to establish that women have an equal right to be in the military. The petition was filed with the Supreme Court of Israel. The Supreme Court is expected to make a decision on the matter in the next few days. It is hoped that the petition will pave the way for the creation of a women's unit in the Israeli army. The move would allow women to be part of the military for the first time in their lives. It would also allow them to have a voice in the decision-making process of the army.

The petition seeks to establish that women have an equal right to be assigned to combat roles • The panel is headed by the President of the Supreme Court, Justice Esther Hayut

Another hearing on the petition of the female fighters is taking place this morning (Tuesday) at the Supreme Court, with the panel headed by the President of the Supreme Court, Justice Esther Hayut. The petition seeks to establish that women have an equal right to be assigned to combat positions in the IDF's special units.

The Dvora Forum (Women in Foreign and Security Policy) lamented the fact that the IDF continues to place barriers for women, contrary to the letter of the law, and has not yet succeeded in classifying its soldiers according to job requirements and not according to gender.

The Dvora Forum noted that: "Although the IDF is expressing more openness to recruiting women for combat roles, the demand to hold more and more experiences prevents the integration of women equally at this time.

"It is important to remember that female fighters already constitute 18% of the combat system, and their operational contribution is vital and significant. We at the Dvora Forum have been accompanying the petitioners for years and strengthening their hands until the Supreme Court decides on this important petition."

Two months ago, the army notified the High Court of Justice that the opening of the mobility department in the infantry brigade for women's service would be postponed, and that the examination regarding women's experience in the maneuvering armored corps would be postponed. At the same time, tank service in the Border Defense Corps will continue.

This announcement came after the IDF announced that it intended to begin the process of integrating women into the 669th and Yahalam units, and even to open a women's mobility department in one of the infantry brigades. The IDF's decision to open the 669 and the Yahalam unit to women's service was originally made following a committee established to examine the issue after the petition was filed with the High Court of Justice.
