Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen – An old, now demolished wooden hut below the church of St. Johannes in Holzhausen: There is talk of ritual sacrifices and black masses, as well as of ghostly apparitions and a dead raven that had been deposited on the grave of a self-confessed occultist on Good Friday. "It's an absolutely uncanny place," Fritz Fenzl emphasizes. He visited places where murders happened and sinister things happened - and now sends interested people on a horror tour with his book "Schauerorte - Logen - Morde in Oberbayern".

"Lake Starnberg, or Würmsee, attracts not only the rich and famous, but also the sulphurous dark side," the author is convinced. He tells of the events in the villa of Count von Schrenck-Notzigen on the Ammerlander Seestraße, of the undead, of the appearance of the summoned spirits.

From the skeleton that was stuck in a sewer shaft near Andechs. Or what was it like with the Madonna, who had to vacate her place in Bernried for a more beautiful sculpture – and began to cry? Fenzl talks about the hooded figures dressed in black magic on the way to the Pähler Gorge near Kochel. And, coming back to Holzhausen: "Here, above and below ground, dark secrets slumber that never want to be named."

Fenzl takes his readers to 85 horror places and lost places across Upper Bavaria, including the final resting places of murder victims Walter Sedlmayr and Rudolph Moshammer. In the individual chapters, he briefly describes the story of how to get to the address given – and does not skimp on tips.

These range from a worthwhile stop or a visit to an adventure apiary, to the time of day to achieve the greatest creepy factor. "It's best to explore it alone at full moon and read up on it beforehand. Frenzl was born in Munich in 1952 and studied German language and literature, Catholic theology, history, art history and sculpture. He began writing during his studies – and in the 1980s was considered the youngest tower scribe. Numerous prizes and awards followed.

Great interest in Lost Places - "In a way, it has always been like this"

Later, he headed the Munich literary archive Monacensia for nine years, and still gives guided tours of Munich and its special magical places and places of power. And then there was his own feelings, which he discovered during his research. "I'm like a living divining rod," he once said. He simply feels the charisma and power of a place, whether in a negative or positive sense.

Where does the Munich native's interest in the crimes and horror stories come from? Lost places in particular are booming these days. "In a way, this has always been the case," Fenzl believes, referring to the gruesome public executions in the Middle Ages. "On the one hand, this served as a deterrent, but on the other hand, it also served to entertain the people."

And how is the author himself? Is it even possible to sleep well after so much research about suffering and death? Fenzl laughs. "I sleep fantastically well." But: "If I'm honest, I'd rather deal with healing places in my next book for a change." Assuming, of course, that the ghosts let him – which is absolutely not certain. .sh
