Against the backdrop of Netanyahu's trial, former police commissioner Roni Alsheikh said in an interview with Galatz on Wednesday: "No one could have guessed that Prime Minister Netanyahu would not resign and choose to fight from within the system. I am referring this to a party that is fighting and does not understand that it has to say that for the good of the country, 'we are putting another man at the head of us,'" and continued, "There was no plan to remove a sitting prime minister, no one foresaw what could happen as a result of an indictment according to a completely legal procedure."

In response to the interview, Minister Moshe Arbel said: "Mr. Roni Alsheikh's remarks on Army Radio this morning that the work plan was to remove an elected prime minister from office and the reference scenario Olmert would have worries anyone who wants to live in a democratic state," and continued, "These terrible remarks against the core of the democratic regime deserve to be included in the civics curriculum. And to be a warning sign for all of us, supporters and opponents of the government. The policy of toppling an elected government through criminalization is the greatest danger to democratic rule."

Minister Ofir Akunis also responded: "The citizens of Israel were exposed this morning to the bitter truth: an attempt was made here that failed to oust, by improper means, a prime minister elected by the Israeli public. As I have said in the past and in light of the new revelations, in and out of the trial, including in this interview: Netanyahu's trial must stop."

Minister Bezalel Smotrich posted a response on Twitter: "This is exactly what a regime coup looks like. Israel cannot be turned into a dictatorship."
