What's happening in the Côte d'Azur capital? In less than a week, two illegal sheep farms and slaughterhouses were discovered in the middle of the city. The last was unearthed Wednesday at midday by a rescue police crew, Mercantour district, northeast of Nice. The case was revealed on Twitter by the first deputy mayor delegate for Security, Anthony Borré.

A message accompanied by several photos on which we can distinguish a dozen sheep alive, tools that are obviously used for cutting and carcasses in plastic bags. "If worship is freely exercised in France, it cannot be done above the laws of the Republic and elementary hygiene conditions!", pointed out the elected in his message. And for good reason, this second discovery comes precisely on the day of a Muslim religious festival, Eid-el-Kebir. It is customary that on this occasion, sheep are sacrificed to be eaten.

Contacted, the Departmental Security of the Alpes-Maritimes specifies that the sheep were found in a room adjoining a villa located boulevard du Mercantour and the carcasses in a refrigerated truck parked in the courtyard of the house. On the spot, six individuals were arrested and immediately taken into custody. For these acts, they face a three-year prison sentence and a heavy fine.

Two men awaiting trial

As recently as Sunday, another slaughterhouse was discovered in the Bindong district. In a squatted apartment of 12m2were crammed about forty animals. Two Tunisian nationals aged 37 and 38, named Abdelkader and Foued, residing in the vicinity, were implicated. They were legally resident in France and worked as temporary masonry.

In front of the investigators, the two men did not deny having sacrificed an animal but deny being at the origin of this improvised enclosure in a building. Unknown to the police, they are prosecuted for "illegal slaughter", "concealed work" and for various damages to an apartment that does not belong to them. For this, they risk up to 3 years in prison. Pending their trial, which is scheduled to take place on 7 August, they have not been placed in pre-trial detention but are under judicial control.
