Two minors, aged 14 and 15, were tried Wednesday at the juvenile court of Grasse during the expected trial of the assault of an octogenarian last August, in Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes). After a lengthy hearing, the individuals were sentenced to 12 months in prison suspended for two years.

On August 29, 2022, they attacked an elderly lady who was returning home after shopping. Angèle Houin, 89, did not know that she was being followed by three young people on the way to her residence. One of them had punched him violently from behind, while his sidekick rushed to steal his bag, and a third filmed the scene. The victim had collapsed, while the three miners left with their meager loot. These images, recorded by CCTV cameras of the municipality, had provoked emotion and national indignation.

Obligation to treat oneself

This sanction decided by the Grasse court means that the two young individuals will be able to leave the closed educational center in which they were and that they will have to respect a certain number of obligations, such as that of medical treatment or to follow a training and have a job. They will also have to compensate the civil party and no longer enter into contact with it but also with each other. The third suspect, who filmed the acts with his phone, was acquitted during the guilty review hearing but will be tried on appeal by the prosecutor's office in September, in Aix-en-Provence.

The mayor of Cannes, David Lisnard, was indignant at such facts at the time and wanted to punish the parents of minors by removing social assistance. In a letter to the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, he also wanted the minority excuse for the defendants to be lifted.

At the end of the decision rendered Wednesday, David Lisnard, also president of the Association of Mayors of France, was annoyed by a "non-sanction (in view of the seriousness of the facts proven and undisputed facts)" on his Twitter account. According to him, this "does not respect the victim and does not protect society". With the MP for the 8th district of Maralpine, Alexandra Martin (LR), he recalled "the urgency of carrying out the reform of the Criminal Justice of minors" that they propose jointly.
