Hannibal has been held in Lebanon for more than seven years after going on a hunger strike to protest his detention without trial

The medical condition of Hannibal Gaddafi, the son of a former Libyan dictator, has deteriorated, the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported on Wednesday.

Hannibal was kidnapped in 2015 in Lebanon after arriving at the persuasion of a mysterious woman. He was later arrested by the authorities for his alleged involvement in the disappearance of Shiite Imam Musa al-Sadr. An issue that has generated great tension between the countries.

Hannibal denies the accusations against him and stresses that he was not yet three years old when Musa al-Sadr disappeared. The latter was a prominent Shiite leader in Lebanon who was officially invited to Libya in 1978. It was believed that dictator Gaddafi had ordered the assassination of al-Sadr and the delegation. The elder Gaddafi was lynched during Libya's 2011 civil war that ousted him from power.

Sources told the newspaper that the reason for the deterioration in his condition was the hunger strike he was taking for the fourth consecutive week to protest his imprisonment in Lebanon.

According to the sources, the Lebanese internal security apparatus was forced to evacuate Gaddafi to the hospital closest to the command's general headquarters for treatment. The sources also stressed that there was concern about his medical condition.

The sources also revealed that the department had already transferred him to the hospital twice before against his will, based on medical reports. At first, they said, he suffered from back pain and the second time due to a drop in blood sugar. Currently, Hannibal refuses to eat and drinks only water occasionally.
