If we were an advertising agency, we might have already started drafting a contract for a huge campaign for the days after leaving the firehouse, but in the meantime, let us act as your waiters for the day and explain exactly what it's all about.

Korean coffee is actually whipped iced coffee. It originates from a café in Macau, a peninsula off China's southern coast near Hong Kong. The person who popularized the drink was Korean actor Jong Il Woo when he tasted it on a well-known Korean food show in 2020 and stated that it tasted similar to that of a classic whipped Korean candy reminiscent of an airy honeycomb called "Delgona" (which means sweet).

After Il Vu's performance, the network was filled with videos of surfers preparing and consuming the whipped coffee. The hashtags "Korean coffee" and "Delgona" have received millions of mentions on TikTok and other social platforms. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when people were confined to their homes, the drink's popularity soared even more and it was even crowned a 'quarantine drink'. To make it really sweet, the coffee received a further boost in the famous Netflix series "Squid Games," where the original candy starred in the second game.

Whipped coffee is, of course, not a new or Korean invention. However, in the context of Korea - as far as is known, the origin of the drink is in an abandoned shipyard of a man named Leung Kam Hoon. Hun, also known as the Kung Fu Master, opened a café called Hon Kee in 1990 to serve port workers. In 2013, he revealed in an interview with CNN that an English-speaking couple who regularly frequented their coffee shop in the late 1997s and early 2004s were the ones who taught him in <> how to make whipped coffee out of regular coffee. Actor Chow Yun Fat from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon visited the café in <> and fell in love with Hun's whipped coffee, which has since become known as Chow Yun Fat Coffee. He was identified with his drinking until actor Jong Il Woo arrived and "stole" his fame.
