"At least 20 million euros in damage". Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM), a local public institution in charge of financing transport in the region, has drawn up an initial assessment of the financial cost of the riots of recent days for public transport. The IDFM estimates that the destruction inflicted on equipment and vehicles is in several tens of millions of euros, Le Figaro learned, confirming information from Le Parisien.
Forty buses set on fire
Buses set on fire, drivers attacked, trams targeted by fireworks ... The riots of recent days, triggered after the death of the young Nahel killed by a policeman on June 27 in Nanterre, have caused a lot of damage in the Paris region. The regional transport authority lists "at this stage" about forty burned buses. The tram of tram line T6 was completely destroyed by fire in Clamart and line T10 heavily damaged. Rails and street furniture were also affected on several tram lines.
Regarding the organization that will have to pay this heavy bill, the IDFM ensures that it is "still too early to know in detail the terms of payment and its precise distribution". The surface transport of Île-de-France, bus and tram, will also end their day again at 21 p.m. at the latest this Monday evening, "to preserve the safety of agents and travelers" even if the intensity of the riots has decreased significantly, had indicated the IDFM earlier in the day. The regional transport authority has invited "travelers to anticipate their trips now".
