For the first time in the European Union: openly gay man became head of state. History was made by Edgar Rinkevices, who was sworn in today in Riga, the capital of Latvia.

The Riga parliament elected Rinkevichs, 49, as president in May this year after three rounds of voting. Rinkevičiš, who has served as Latvia's foreign minister since 2011, came out three years later and was one of the leaders of the fight for LGBT rights. Same-sex marriage is illegal in Latvia, but the Constitutional Court last year recognized the institution of civil unions.

In his inaugural address, Rinkevics pledged to "fight for a modern and strong Latvia, a just Latvia, for the welfare of the people, and for an inclusive and respectful society." He also vowed to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion. "We have no time for mistakes, Latvia must act quickly, decisively and wisely," he added.

Rinkeviches will replace Agilas Levitas, who served as president for 4 years. The Latvian president has essentially a ceremonial role, but he also has the power to veto legislation and declare referendums.
