Bordeaux: a slum evacuated after four years of occupation

The largest slum of Bordeaux, located quai de Brazza, on the right bank of Bordeaux, will be evacuated this Wednesday, announced the prefecture of Gironde to its occupants, explaining that it will be able to use the police to apply this decision. For several years, this place had been squatted by dozens of Roma and Bulgarian families.

The prefecture specifies that the first installations took place in the summer of 2019 on one of the three sites concerned, before spreading over the other two. Since that date, the number of people on site was "variable", explain the services of the State. The premises, owned by the city of Bordeaux, have since been constantly occupied, despite evacuation orders issued in 2019, 2022 and 2023.

The administrative court had finally ordered the absorption of the slum in October 2022, but the city of Bordeaux had committed to associations that the police would not intervene during the winter. According to several testimonies, since the announcement of the evacuation, many families have already deserted the premises.
