Better growth in the euro zone, inflation falling below 2%, falling unemployment... The Spanish economy may be buzzing "like a motorcycle", according to its outgoing Prime Minister, the socialist Pedro Sanchez, the latter could, according to the polls, be beaten by the candidate of the right, Alberto Nuñez Feijoo, this Sunday, in the early legislative elections that he has called by surprise. The PSOE leader touts his record after five years at the Moncloa Palace, but voters seem ready to turn the page.
Spain, however, is showing economic performance that has pale over its eurozone neighbours, who have collectively entered a technical recession this winter. After growth of 5.5% last year, the Bank of Spain recently revised its forecast to 2.3% for this year (from 1.6% previously expected) – significantly better than the France, let alone Germany, in recession.
