The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem officially announces the appointment of Deputy Ambassador Stephanie Hallett as Head of U.S. Missions in Israel.
Hallett, who is a professional diplomat rather than a political appointee, will replace Tom Nides, who stepped down this week for personal reasons. Hallett, who among other things is leading the process of exempting Israelis from the siege to obtain visas to enter the United States, will serve in the role until the American president appoints a new ambassador on his behalf. At this stage, however, it is unclear whether the administration will indeed enter the process of reappointing an ambassador, since this is a long and complicated procedure for the Americans.

Prior to becoming Deputy Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, she served until recently as Acting Senior Director for Middle East and North African Affairs and Director of Gulf Affairs at the U.S. National Security Council. She also served as Deputy Ambassador at the U.S. missions in Nicosia, Cyprus, and Muscat, Oman.
Among other positions she held, she served as Deputy Director of the Executive Secretariat in Washington, Head of the Political and Economic Section at the U.S. Embassy in Manama, Bahrain, and Deputy Political Adviser at the U.S. Embassy in Egypt's capital, Cairo. Stephanie has also served in the Office of Iran Affairs, the State Department Operations Center in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Consulates General in Monterrey, Mexico, and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. She is a graduate of George Washington University and Cambridge University.
