Emmanuel Macron said Monday he understood the "emotion" of the police after the recent riots, but he recalled that "no one in the Republic was above the law", refusing to comment on the controversial remarks of the boss of the DGPN who estimated that a police officer "has no place in prison".
The "legitimacy" of the police "is due to the fact that they protect the republican framework and that they enforce the democratically voted laws," responded the President of the Republic on TF1 and France 2.
'Extreme violence'

Of course, they themselves are within the framework of the law and the rule of law," he said. Emmanuel Macron was questioned about the statements of Frédéric Veaux, director general of the national police (DGPN), who wished Sunday the release of a police officer of the BAC of Marseille incarcerated as part of an investigation into police violence committed on the sidelines of the recent riots. "It is a decision that was taken by a magistrate and therefore I will not pronounce on it," explained the head of state, recalling that he is "the guarantor of the institutions and also the independence of the judicial authority".
After recalling that 900 police officers had been injured during the riots and that they had faced "extreme violence", Emmanuel Macron, walking on a ridge line, stressed the importance of "hearing this emotion". Four police officers were indicted on Friday and one of them placed in pre-trial detention. They are suspected of having shot a 21-year-old man with a LBD before beating him on the sidelines of the recent riots.
