The doctors' protest organization, the White Claws, called on the Israel Medical Association on Monday to declare an indefinite strike in the health system. This was in response to the cancellation of the reasonableness grounds by the coalition.

"At this time, the die has been cast in Israel and the coalition has unreasonablely abolished the rule of law and violated the Israeli contract," the organization said. In this unilateral act, the coalition chose to shut down the health system. We will not be able to properly treat patients under limitless and unreasonable rule. We expect the Israel Medical Association to fulfill the demand of the majority of doctors in Israel to declare a strike that will take effect immediately and indefinitely."

Members of the group will convene tomorrow for an emergency meeting to announce their continued activities.

If the Israel Medical Association responds to their call, they will join Histadrut Chairman Arnon Ben David, who threatened today after the Knesset finally abolished the reasonableness grounds that from now on, any move advanced by the legal revolution without the opposition's consent "will have severe consequences."

"I will not allow the rift and polarization among the people to deepen. Either things will progress with broad consensus, or they will not progress at all," he declared. "Already in the coming days, I will convene the Histadrut's higher institutions with the intention of declaring a general labor dispute in the economy and activating it when necessary until a full shutdown."

Last week, the Israel Medical Association announced a two-hour warning strike at hospitals and HMOs, and even threatened to escalate the shutdown to a full-day strike, a threat that ultimately did not materialize.

The Histadrut argued that without reasonable grounds there could be serious harm to patients, and decided to go on strike because of the many powers that the Minister of Health may have, compared to other ministers, such as a decision on a contagious disease, changes in medical leaderships or even the appointment of professional staff, without passing legislation in the Knesset. The chairman of the State Physicians Association, Dr. Zeev Feldman, led a survey of 2741 physicians, according to which 81% thought the Histadrut should act and oppose the current legislative change. 74% believed that work should be done in an emergency format if the legislation is not stopped.
