The National Unit for Combating Economic Crime in Lahav 433 arrested a 64-year-old mayor from the north from Rameh on suspicion of involvement in extortion, threats and collecting money for his relatives - members of a criminal organization from the north and on suspicion of committing money laundering offenses. The investigation revealed that business owners from the north were blackmailed by threats by members of the criminal organization, and as part of arbitration proceedings conducted by the head of the council, he received the extortion money from the victims for the organization. The investigation also revealed that the head of the council served as a long arm of the criminal organization in his capacity as head of the council.

At the same time, the head of the Marama criminal organization was arrested, and additional suspects were arrested and detained for interrogation. Today the suspects will be brought to a hearing to extend their detention at the Rishon LeZion Magistrate's Court.

Last February, police arrested 21 members of the Abu Latif family's criminal organization in Rameh, including council head Shawki Latif. About 700 police officers took part in an operation in which forces raided the homes of members of "the largest criminal organization in the country," as part of an investigation that exposed tax evasion worth NIS 28 billion and was dubbed "the black billionaire."

Among other things, 80 luxury cars were confiscated, including Lamborghini, Maybach and Mercedes, a million and a half shekels in cash and checks worth tens of millions of shekels. In addition, more than 50 bank accounts and more than <> units of real estate were seized.
